Bearberry, kinnikinnick

Name: Bearberry, kinnikinnick
Scientific name: Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
Possible uses: urinary disorders
Part of plant used: dried leaves
Description: Evergreen shrubs with small leathery leaves and fruit like tiny apples.  A hardy native evergreen shrub that makes a fine ground cover for rocky or sandy slopes.  It stays under 1 ft. tall but spreads more than 5 ft. wide.  The leathery round leaves are glossy green in summer, bronzy reddish purple in winter.  has pale pinkish white flowers in spring, lustrous red fruits in fall.  Named cultivars such as 'Point Reyes,' 'Vancouver Jade,' and 'Massachusetts' are especially desirable.  Zone 3.
How to grow: Full or part sun.  Needs well-drained soil.  Plant 2 ft. apart for ground cover, and use mulch to control weeds until it fills in.  Can take infrequent foot traffic.  Needs virtually no care.
