So what is Vraylar?
Vraylar (also known as cariprazine) is used for the treatment of schizophrenia and acute treatment of maniac or mixed episodes of bipolar 1 disorders
How does it look like?
Right now capsules, but who knows what would it looks like when the generic comes out.
How is it dosed?
Usually once a day, and the reason for this is because of the long half life. For schizophrenia the dose starts at 1.5 mg and can increase to 3 mg on the second day. The max dose is 6 mg according to the package insert. Also, the dose range for schizophrenia is 1.5-6 mg. For bipolar disorders, the dose starts at 1.5 mg and increases to 3 mg on day 2. The max dose for bipolar is 6 mg. The dose range for bipolar is 3-6 mg.
Do I need to take food with it?
No you don't have to if you want to.
This drug is metabolized by CYP3A4, so be careful is patients are taking other medications that are metabolized by this CYP.
Contraindications?
Patients with hypersensitivity to cariprazine.
Warnings and precautions
- Cerebrovascular adverse reactions in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
- Tardive Dyskinesia
- Late-occurring adcerse reactions
- Metabolic changes
- Orthostatic hypotension
Mechanism of Action
It is an atypical antipsychotic that has partial agonist activity towards D2 and 5-HT1a receptors and have antagonist activity towards 5-HT2a receptors.
