
Scientific name: Acorus calamus
Possible uses: indigestion, stimulant, heartburn, colds, fevers
Part of plant used: leaves, rhizome
Description: Rhizomatous perennials with upright fans of slender leaves and tiny flowers in a thumb-like cluster. Only 2 species, native to wetlands in Eurasia and North America. Spreads 2 ft. or more to form a dense patch of slender leaves, 4 ft. tall, that resemble cattails but have pronounced midribs. The leaves release a spicy fragrance when crushed. A variegated form with creamy white stripes on the leaves is especially attractive. Zone 3.
How to grow: Sun or shade. Prefers fertile soil and constant moisture but will grow in ordinary soil with regular watering. Propagate by division in spring or fall. Long-lived and trouble-free.
