Scientific name: Anthemis tinctoria
Possible uses: cloth dye, hair dye
Part of plant used: flowers
Description: Annuals or perennials with toothed or divided leaves and rounded or daisylike flower heads. Many have aromatic foliage; some are weedy. A hardy perennial that's showy in midsummer, with masses of yellow or gold blossoms on stalks 2-3 ft. tall. Makes a 2-ft. mound of fragrant, lacy, gray-green foliage. Perennial nurseries carry several cultivars selected for pale or bright flower colors. A. sancti-johannis is a similar plant with orange flowers. Zone 3.
How to grow: Full sun. Average well-drained soil with regular watering. Does best where summers are mild; can't tolerate extreme heat or drought. Blooms the first year from seed sown early indoors. Deadhead to prolong bloom, and cut back after flowering is done. Divide every few years in spring.
