Herbal Cosmeceuticals - A brief

Herbal Cosmeceuticals are becoming popular by the day and it's not surprising owing to their many advantages especially when compared to synthetic ones. They're, for the most part, safe to use, Compatible with all skin types, have no side effects, and are Not tested on animals "natural cosmetics need not be tested on animals. These natural formulations are tested by experts in laboratories using state of the art equipment with no animals involved".

So what does the term "
Cosmeceuticals" mean exactly?
Even if you haven't heard the term before, you've probably come in contact with plenty of cosmeceuticals in your life "Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic-pharmaceutical products intended to improve the health and beauty of the skin by providing a specific result. The Cosmeceuticals are topical agents that are distributed across broad spectrum of materials, lying somewhere between pure cosmetics (lipstick and rouge) and pure drug (antibiotics, corticosteroids)".

So basically, cosmeceuticals are makeup with a healing/drug effect to not only "beautify" externally but to also penetrate the skin and cure/prevent some skin ailments. For instance, a foundation that has sun protecting properties is a cosmeceutical.

Cosemceuticals have been around for a very long time but it wasn't until 1980, that they were given this name by Dr. Albert Kligman. However, it's important to note that the term only helps us categorise a certain group of products that don't strictly fall under either the "pharmaceuticals" or the "cosmetics" category but according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act "does not recognize any such category as "cosmeceuticals". A product can be a drug, a cosmetic, or a combination of both, but the term "cosmeceutical" has no meaning under the law.

Many herbs have been incorporated in various cosmeceuticals such as :

  • Green Tea, which has long been used for it's antioxidant properties "It is a premiere skin protectant. It protects against direct damage to the cell and moderates inflammation. The catechins in green tea are some 20 times stronger in their antioxidant powers than even Vitamin E"
  • Peppermint : peppermint oil can be used in cosmetics such as hair conditioners and/or shampoos to heal the scalp.
  • Eucalyptus oil : it can help to get rid of dandruff, which in turn can help to promote healthy growth of hair.
and this is just to name a few of the wide variety of herbs that take part in said cosmeceuticals.

As noted above, cosmeceuticals, especially herbal ones, are growing more popular as consumers are becoming more aware of the great benefits of herbs to the skin and hair which in turn increases the overall appeal. I only expect the demand on herbal cosmeceuticals and natural beauty products in general to increase as days go by.
