Ginger

Name: Ginger, African ginger, Cochin ginger,
Scientific name: Zingiber officinale
Possible uses: anti-angina, heart attack prevention, antioxidant, nausea, anti-inflammatory, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, antifungal, athlete's foot, flavoring agent, vomiting prevention, reduce cold sweating, motion sickness, migraine, elevated cholesterol levels, rheumatism, hepatotoxicity, burns, peptic ulcers, depression, aging penile vascular changes, impotence, digestive aid
Active constituents: zingibain, caprylic acid, bisabolene, shogaols, gingerols
Side effects: prolong bleeding (use in caution in patients after surgery and taking anticoagulants)

You can make a decoction out of ginger and use a cotton ball to rub it into the infection site.  Another way this can be used is to make a tea.  There's even ginger candy for those who don't like capsules or teas!  The candies are made from rhizomes and sugars  This doesn't affect the brain so much, mostly the stomach.  Did you know that this herb has a class B recommendation for use of nausea and vomiting in pregnant patients?  That's super cool and I wish more herbals have this recommendation!
